Verizon Taking Strides to Lead SDP Race
By Michelle Maisto

A new generation of emerging software platforms is the topic of a recent Yankee Group report. Service delivery platforms (SDPs) will meet an important need, according to the report, by addressing “the interoperability and integration issues users face in moving across networks, devices, applications and content.” Rob Rich, author of the report, describes a scenario in which a mobile professional in 2007 is performing multiple, seamless transactions while en-route to catch a flight. While the pro's capabilities are a bit futuristic, Rich writes, “…virtually all of the technology components required [in the scenario] exist today in various states of maturity. What has been missing is the ability of the network to tie all of these capabilities together.”

The report goes on to name Verizon as a leader in SDP deployment with the launch of its iobi Home. iobi can be accessed in three different ways: through the iobi Home client software on a personal computer with an Internet connection (high speed or dial-up), through the iobi Home Web site on any computer, or by phone, via a voice-recognition portal. And its intention, according to a Verizon press release, is to let consumers be in two places at once (if it could just put eyes in the back of users' heads, now every busy parent's hopes could be answered).

Wi-Fi Finds its Voice
Wi-Fi isn't just for data, but adding voice involves more than simply buying 802.11 phones.

The Pacific Sunwear clothing and accessory brand projects an image of always being on the go—which is a great way to appeal to teens but the wrong image to project when you're trying to do business.

“Key management and support personnel were often away from their desks and weren't reachable via telephone,” says Ron Ehlers, the company's VP of information services. “Since they were away from their desks, they didn't receive and couldn't respond to voicemail messages in a timely manner.”

The solution? Voice over wireless LAN (VoWLAN), which uses 802.11 Wi-Fi networks to support phones alongside the usual assortment of data devices, such as laptops and PDAs. VoWLAN's business case is a familiar one: Like cellular, the constant link makes employees more productive and easier to reach. “Although not quantified, we have seen productivity gains, time savings, cost savings, improved decision-making and greater sharing of information” since the VoWLAN was deployed, Ehlers says.
