Samsung Surpasses Motorola

According to FinanceGates.com, Samsung Electronics outsold Motorola to become the world's second largest handset company. Gartner notes that Samsung posted a market share of 13.8 percent, which nudges it past Motorola's 13.4 percent. “This is a blow to Motorola,” says Gartner analyst Ben Wood.

Though the breakthrough is impressive for Samsung, whose market share stood at a meager 2.7 percent just six years ago, Samsung only bested Motorola by 588,000 in the third quarter. With fourth quarter results not in yet, there's plenty of room for Motorola to make up the difference during the holiday shopping season and recapture the second spot. With a handful of new handsets, including the MPx and MPx220, Motorola may do just that.

Sierra Wireless announces new appointments to Senior Management Team
Sierra Wireless is pleased to announce two new appointments to its senior management team. Dan Schieler has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales responsible for global sales, distribution and pre-sales technical support functions. NAVTEQ, a leading global provider of digital map data for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions, has been chosen by Lowrance, a leader in consumer marine electronics worldwide, to provide NAVTEQ maps of North America for use in the first Lowrance portable automotive turn-by-turn navigation GPS: the iWay 500c portable in-vehicle navigation system with MP3 player. The license agreement also formalizes the use of NAVTEQ maps in all of Lowrance's turn-by-turn navigation products launching in the continental United States and Canada over the next three years.

Cingular Wi-Fi Goes Live at RDU
Cingular Wireless and the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority announced that high-speed wireless Internet service is now available at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU). The newly installed Wi-Fi service allows travelers inside terminal gates and concourses to have un-tethered, high-speed access to the Internet using laptop computers and other wireless devices.
