At the beginning of the year, Ed Meskill, publisher of Mobile Enterprise, and I spoke to the members of our editorial advisory team about the direction of the magazine, potential articles and other details of the industry. At the time, one of our board members, Lee Sherman, boldly predicted that by year’s end we’d see Palm selling devices based on platforms other than Palm OS. He was right.
Among the many interesting products and partnerships unveiled at the CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2005 show at the end of September in San Francisco, Palm, Microsoft and Verizon Wireless held a press conference to highlight a new Palm Treo that will operate with Windows Mobile 5 on the Verizon Wireless network. While changes have been unfolding at Palm over the last few months signaling a new direction, I think it is an understatement to call this new device a true paradigm shift for the people who invented the PDA. Read our full show coverage in this month’s Browser department for more details.
This month you’ll also find an in-depth look at what the transportation industry is doing with mobility and technologies such as RFID from writer William Gillis. Staff Editor Teresa von Fuchs details strategies for managing all those devices cluttering your enterprise. And regular contributor Tim Scannell rounds out the issue with a host of suggestions about how warehouses can put data to work for them.
