RIM Takes Top Five Position in Mobile Phone Market
By Jeff Goldman
Research firm IDC has released its Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker for the first quarter of 2010, which places Research In Motion in the top five mobile phone vendor rankings for the first time.

By shipping 10.6 million units in the first quarter, RIM replaced Motorola (which had been in the top five since the inception of the Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker in 2004), and tied Sony Ericsson for the number four position.

"The entrance of RIM into the top five underscores the sustained smartphone growth trend that is driving the global mobile phone market recovery," says IDC senior research analyst Kevin Restivo.
