IDC: Smartphone Shipments More Than Double Q1-2009
by Evan Koblentz - May 7, 2010

The global smartphone market more than doubled in size for the first calendar quarter of 2010, with 54.7 million units shipped, research firm IDC said today.

Such results are "a sign the segment is in high-growth mode again," IDC analysts stated. Smartphones are now 18.8% of all mobile phones sales, up from 14.4% a year ago.

"Users are seeking -- and finding -- experiences that are intuitive, seamless, and fun. Already, we've seen what Palm's webOS and Google's Android can do. This year, we expect updates for BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile to spark greater smartphone demand with their offerings," analyst Ramon Llamas wrote.

Greater awareness, increasingly affordable data plans, and the global economic recovery are other also important reasons for smartphones' growth, IDC's Kevin Restivo added.
