Mobile Domain Approved and Coming Soon

A new Top Level Domain (TLD), .mobi, created specially for mobile device users, was approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) at a Luxemburg meeting on July 11 th . The mobile domain is expected to be up and running in the first quarter of 2006. Internet sites with a .mobi suffix are expected to start popping up soon thereafter. The URLs will be assigned next summer and owners of registered brands will be given a 90-day period to register their claim to similarly named .mobi addresses. The new domain is represented by mTLD, a joint venture between supporters including Ericsson, GSM Association, Hutchison, Microsoft, Samsung Electronics, Nokia, Syniverse Technologies, TIM, T-Mobile and Vodaphone.

Enterprise Solutions Webinar Series

With wireless analysts predicting that two-thirds of all U.S. employees will be mobile by 2006, the CTIA Wireless Internet Caucus (WIC) Enterprise Action Team, a consortium of leading wireless carriers and mobile data vendors, is launching an aggressive, enterprise-focused educational program to help spur the adoption of wireless data solutions.

In support of the educational program, CTIA's Wireless Internet Caucus and Mobile Enterprise Media have implemented a partnership agreement to launch a series of instructional Webinars focused on specific market segments and to create an online forum, through which enterprises can more easily and effectively evaluate wireless data solutions.

Defywire Secures Patent that Allows Wireless Devices to Transfer Multiple Types of Data Simultaneously
Today, when using many of the mobile data devices that combine voice functionality with e-mail or some other type of data application, there’s one big drawback: most wireless data devices will not allow you to make a voice call while simultaneously downloading or uploading data such as e-mail. So if you receive a phone call while checking your e-mail, the call goes directly to voice mail. It also means mobile workers, for instance, cannot use the same wireless device to check the status of an order while talking to the customer in real-time.

LG Electronics Signs Agreement with PalmSource to LicensePalm OS
LG Electronics and PalmSource, provider of Palm OS, a leading operating system powering next generation phones and mobile devices, has announced that LG Electronics has signed an agreement to license Palm OS worldwide. Under terms of the agreement, LG Electronics can develop and market smartphones based on Palm OS.
