By Teresa von Fuchs

Dual Wi-Fi and Voice over IP (VoIP) handset revenue totaled $45 million worldwide in 2004, according to Infonetics, an international market research and consulting firm covering the data networking and telecommunications industries. Infonetics' latest report, "Wi-Fi Phones Annual Worldwide Market Size and Forecast," also stated that Wi-Fi VoIP handset units sold totaled 113,000. Revenue and units are projected to show strong growth through 2009, according to the report, as enterprises slowly but steadily continue to deploy voice over wireless LANs (VoWLAN).

Wi-Fi and VoIP handsets are still new to the market, only becoming readily available in the last quarter of 2004, and so only represent a fairly small market share, though one with great potential in the enterprise space. The latter is particularly true in logistics and healthcare verticals, where, according to Infonetics, VoWLAN is already gaining momentum and will become more widespread.
