The Acquisition Season

In another industry acquisition announced in the last two weeks, Qualcomm, creator of CDMA technology, has announced its plans to acquire Flarion, a developer of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex Access (OFDMA) technology and the inventor of FLASH-OFDM technology for mobile broadband IP services.

Qualcomm is full of positive words about Flarion's addition. Dr. Paul Jacobs, CEO of Qualcomm, says, “The combination of Flarion and Qualcomm's engineering resources strengthens our position as a continued technology innovator and leader in the wireless industry. We believe CDMA will provide the most advanced wide area wireless networks for the foreseeable future, but with Flarion we can now more effectively support operators who prefer an OFDMA or hybrid OFDM/CDMA track for differentiating their services.”

Enterprise Solutions Webinar Series

With wireless analysts predicting that two-thirds of all U.S. employees will be mobile by 2006, the CTIA Wireless Internet Caucus (WIC) Enterprise Action Team, a consortium of leading wireless carriers and mobile data vendors, is launching an aggressive, enterprise-focused educational program to help spur the adoption of wireless data solutions.

Hitachi to Launch GPS-based Cellular Local Information Service
Hitachi will fully commercialize Chizukuru, a service which allows cellphone users to access local information on discount coupons and time-specific services via GPS and other geographical functions, on August 27.

Massachusetts Selects NAVTEQ Data for Multi-Agency Enterprise Deployment Agreement Entered With ADCi, leading NAVTEQ data Distributor
NAVTEQ, a global provider of digital map data for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions, has been selected by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts through an agreement with American Digital Cartography to provide an enterprise-wide license that allows Commonwealth-wide use of NAVTEQ base maps and associated address range data. ADCi is an authorized distributor for NAVTEQ data to state, county and local governments in the United States. The agreement enables the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to use the NAVTEQ NAVSTREETS data at any of the over 300 agencies that are part of the enterprise-wide license.

Newbury Networks Teams with SAIC to Secure Government and Commercial Wireless Networks
Newbury Networks, the industry’s first and only provider of location-based management and security solutions for wireless networks, announced that it has signed a joint marketing agreement with Science Application International Corporation (SAIC), the largest employee-owned research and engineering company in the United States. Newbury Networks completed installation of its WiFi Watchdog solution at SAIC’s Public Safety Integration Center (PSIC), a laboratory, testbed and prototype demonstration facility, where it can be leveraged to illustrate SAIC’s integration capabilities and expertise with vendors, service providers and the federal government.
