New Vista for Visto

Visto, a provider of personal and corporate wireless email and PIM solutions, has been active in the courts as of late. Throughout a busy summer, the company has been securing new patents and protecting its intellectual property through litigation. A recent settlement with Infowave Software marks its latest accomplishment.

By Bryan Pedersen

Details of the settlement remain undisclosed, though Infowave has acknowledged the validity of Visto’s complete patent portfolio. In return Visto has granted a royalty-bearing license to Infowave for the previously disputed patents.

“This agreement underscores the relevance of Visto’s patent portfolio to the rapidly growing mobile data market,” says Brian Bogosian, chairman, president and CEO of Visto. “We are pleased to have resolved this dispute in a way that was beneficial to both parties.”

The settlement comes on the heels of two patent procurements. In August, the company secured a patent on a system and method using an authentication applet for securely identifying and authenticating mobile and remote users. In late April, Visto was issued a patent describing a system and method for globally and securely accessing unified information in a computer network. These patents bring Visto’s sum to ten U.S. patents relating to the storage, access, translation and synchronization of data.

All the court action is just a sidestep in the company’s growth. Ten wireless operators have adopted the company’s multi-device and OS-independent solutions including AT&T Wireless, Nextel, Rogers Wireless, Telus Mobility, Bell Mobility and others. Visto has received $65 million in venture funding over the last 18 months and was selected by Microsoft and palmSource as a preferred partner.

Their latest product, Visto Mobile 5.0, was released on October 4th, and is an update to their Visto Mobile Technology, an operator-grade architecture for delivering wireless access to e-mail, PIM and desktop files.
