Microsoft, Nokia, Vodafone, HP and other companies recently joined in applying for a new top-level, mobile-specific domain name from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The idea of the mobile-specific domain is to encourage the creation of Web content that is specifically scaled for viewing on mobile devices. It’s all about encouraging further proliferation of wireless mobile devices and ease of use for mobile Web-based applications—and driving revenue for these increasingly mobilized solution providers.

The nine participants signed a memorandum of understanding outlining their intentions to form a registry company to manage the distribution of the new mobile names. The memo claims the registry company will seek further participation of additional members to ensure broad industry input. Other participants include Orange PCS, Hutchinson 3G, the GSM Association, Samsung and Sun Microsystems.

The ICANN application round closed March 15, and at press time a decision on whether to accept or reject the appeal had not been made.
