Nuance Communications is adding multitouch gestures to its T9 Write input system for mobile devices.
The technology has many uses cases, such as highlighting and acting on text with one's fingers, or customizing macro gesture commands to perform complicated tasks, vice-president of product management Matt Revis explained.
T9 Write is platform-agnostic, is available now to handset OEMs, and there is an SDK for software vendors to write to, he added.
Revis also said Nuance will either partner with or offer a competitive product to startup Swype's recently introduced trace data input method, in which users drag their fingertip between on-screen keys rather than lifting and tapping for every virtual press. That's planned for this year, although he declined to give details.
Separately, Naunce said today it's acquiring MacSpeech for an undisclosed amount. That will bring Nuance's speech recognition products into the Apple market.
