iPhone OS v4.0 Follows iPad Launch
By Susan Nunziata
Apple reports that it sold more than 300,000 iPads on April 3, 2010 the product's first day on the market. The iPad news was quickly eclipsed by talk of a next-gen operating system for the iPhone and iPod touch.

On Thursday, April 8, 2010, Apple will hold a press event at its Cupertino, CA headquarters offering a sneak peek at what's expected to be v4.0 of its iPhone and iPod Touch OS.

The OS was last updated in February 2010 with version 3.1.3, although the last major upgrade came in summer 2009.

Blogger speculation is running rampant about what v4.0 may offer, including full multitasking support for third-party applications, higher screen resolution, support for a second camera, and unified email inbox, among other features.

Meanwhile, according to Apple, iPad users downloaded more than 1 million apps from its App Store and 250,000 books from its iBookstore on Day One.

The Wall Street Journal cites various industry analysts forecasting anywhere from 3 million to 7.1 million iPads will be sold by the end of 2010.

The initial $500 iPad offers only WiFi connectivity. Pricier 3G versions are due in late April and will run $630 plus wireless data plan.

Its ability to run only one application at a time may hinder iPad's enterprise adoptability.

Still, even as pundits debate if, or where, iPad fits in the enterprise, a host of business application developers are rushing to support the device.

Among them: virtual desktop tools from Citrix and Wyse PocketCloud, mobility management and security solutions from MobileIron, Sybase Afaria, and Zenprise, and a healthcare communications solution from Voalte.

A survey conducted for Sybase by research firm Zogby International finds that more than half of smartphone users polled are most likely to use a new tablet device like the iPad to conduct work (52.3%).

The survey, released March 23, 2010, polled 2443 adult mobile phone users, 770 of whom own smart phones.

According to survey respondents, the idea of using an iPad or tablet device for work garnered the most interest from smartphone users, while watching movies and television programs, and playing games placed a close second and third respectively (48.2% and 35.4%).

Three-quarters of smartphone users surveyed believe that smartphones and devices like the iPad make people more productive at work
